Naming is a central rite of passage across African societies, but its meanings are most fully grasped through lived participation and experience. Among the Kassena of Burkina Faso and Ghana, the naming of a child is not merely a social convention but a metaphysical act that affirms spiritual lineage, communal belonging, and continuity with the ancestral world. Drawing on a phenomenological approach, this article situates the author’s first-hand experience of multiple Kassena naming ceremonies, with a detailed focus on one rite, as a lens through which to interrogate the cultural and spiritual logics at work. The research is grounded in immersive observation, conversations with diviners and elders, and a close reading of Kassena cosmology .This method privileges the experiential dimensions of ritual, silence, sound, gesture , invocation, as interpretive entry points into understanding how identity is constituted in Kassena thought. The findings highlight how naming ceremonies function simultaneously as spiritual invocations ,social recognitions ,and ontological inscriptions .They also reveal how external forces, especially Christianity, Islam, and urbanization—have reshaped traditional practices, often displacing the ancestral depth ofKassena names with imported alternatives. The article argues that the Kassena naming ceremony embodies alive ontology, in which names are not mere identifiers but metaphysical anchors.By re engaging these rituals incontemporary contexts —including urban and diasporic settings —Kassena Communities can reclaim cultural sovereignty and strengthen resilient identities amidst globalizing change.
